Begin with belief, orientation and your real floor plan

Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian approach to the arrangement of built spaces, connected with cultural and religious ideas about direction, order and the relationship between a home and its surroundings. Practices vary between texts, regions and advisors. The suggestions below are preferences to discuss, rather than one compulsory layout for every property.

First identify north on a reliable floor plan. Record the entrance, windows, columns, plumbing shafts and rooms that already exist. Mark which preferences matter to you and where you are comfortable adapting them. A room is not automatically good or bad because of a single compass direction.

House layout and entrance

Some contemporary Vastu approaches favour an entrance in the north, east or north-east. The exact position is usually considered with the full plot and floor plan, not just the direction written on a door. An existing south- or west-facing home does not need to be described as unlucky or unsafe.

For the actual design, make the entrance clear, well lit and easy to use. Provide a practical door swing, secure hardware and unobstructed circulation. Apartment entrances, common corridors and structural walls often cannot be moved; a sensible interior plan works with these fixed conditions.

Living room and family seating

East and north are commonly preferred in present-day Vastu guidance for living spaces. Where this matches your layout, arrange seating so the family can use the room comfortably and the entrance remains accessible.

Start with how many people use the room, the view, window glare and the position of doors. Leave space around furniture and avoid blocking ventilation. A calm palette and organised storage can support the atmosphere you want, without promising a spiritual outcome from a colour or furniture position.

Kitchen and cooking zone

Traditional Vastu descriptions associate the south-east with fire and often place cooking there. Some contemporary advisors discuss other alternatives when that corner is unavailable. They may also prefer a cooking orientation towards the east. Discuss the complete kitchen arrangement with your chosen advisor rather than applying a direction in isolation.

The working design must still provide a safe cooking zone, extraction, useful preparation space and suitable appliance positions. Locate plumbing, electrical outlets and gas services correctly. Do not move a hob, gas connection or sink merely to meet a symbolic preference without checking the technical requirements.

Bedrooms, bed position and a restful room

Many contemporary Vastu guides prefer the south-west for the principal bedroom and place the bed against a south or west wall. Advisors may also suggest a head position towards the south or east while sleeping. These are traditional preferences, not proven rules about sleep quality or health.

A practical bedroom also needs comfortable access on the usable sides of the bed, suitable lighting, privacy and workable wardrobe doors. Consider noise, ventilation, mattress comfort and window glare. If the existing room is in another part of the home, discuss furniture and storage arrangements without assuming that major demolition is necessary.

Pooja, prayer and meditation spaces

The north-east is traditionally associated with a shrine or prayer space. Some households prefer to face east or north during prayer. Personal worship practices, accessibility and the requirements of the family are equally relevant; there is no single cabinet design that suits every belief.

Plan a quiet, clean location, useful storage and safe lighting. Allow appropriate clearance for lamps or incense, keep heat away from combustible materials and ensure ventilation. A compact mandir unit, a dedicated room or a peaceful meditation corner can be designed around the space available.

Study room and a single-room arrangement

Contemporary Vastu advice often suggests facing east or north when studying. In a bedroom that also serves as a study, identify the bed, desk and storage zones separately rather than forcing all functions into one corner.

Place the desk where it receives useful light without screen glare. Leave room for the chair, keep cables organised and provide storage for the work you actually do. Ergonomics, concentration, privacy and an uncluttered surface remain practical priorities regardless of your chosen orientation.

Dining, storage, bathrooms and the centre of the home

Traditional arrangements may associate western zones with food storage or dining, and distinguish lighter activity areas from heavier storage. Some advisors prefer a less obstructed central area, often discussed as the Brahmasthan. Interpretations differ, especially for modern flats.

Choose dining furniture that fits your family and allows chairs to move comfortably. Use storage where it is accessible and structurally suitable. Keep paths through the home clear. For bathrooms and toilets, existing drainage, waterproofing, ventilation and the building layout should guide decisions; consult your advisor about preferences without treating a fixed plumbing location as a reason for fear.

Office, reception and workstation planning

For offices, some contemporary advisors prefer east- or north-facing workstations and consider the south-west for a principal decision-maker's seating. These are modern interpretations of traditional directional ideas, not guaranteed methods for increasing sales or business success. Your preferred advisor may recommend a different arrangement after reviewing the site.

Begin with the way the business works: reception, visitor movement, private discussions, team desks, meeting areas and storage. Position monitors to reduce glare, allow suitable lighting, manage noise and protect confidential work. Keep emergency routes, accessible paths and electrical safety requirements clear. A symbolic preference must not obstruct a functioning workplace.

Colours, materials and optional astrology

Some people choose colours, symbols or personal ritual dates with guidance from their Vastu or astrology advisor. We can record those preferences in your interior brief and discuss how they fit the desired style, material maintenance and available finishes.

Astrology is a separate personal belief-based consultation; it is not required to use our interior design services. Availability and scope of specialist advice should be confirmed before proceeding. Sensitive birth details are best discussed privately with your chosen advisor, rather than entered into the public enquiry form.

Positive results people hope to experience

Followers may associate Vastu with spiritual harmony, peace, stability and prosperity. Following a familiar tradition may also help some people feel connected to their family practices and more comfortable with their design decisions. These are beliefs and individual experiences; they are not assured effects of placing a room in a particular direction.

Clear circulation, adequate light, ventilation and well-organised storage are practical design goals we can work towards within an agreed scope. Their usefulness should be assessed from the actual property and your needs. We do not promise that a Vastu preference will bring wealth, cure a health condition, improve a relationship or guarantee business growth.

Existing homes and practical alternatives

If your home or office cannot follow every preference, start with the choices you can make: furniture arrangement, storage, lighting, a prayer corner or a quieter working zone. Ask your advisor to explain which suggestions are essential to your beliefs and which are adaptable.

Do not remove structural walls, alter common building services or make costly changes without a proper assessment. Share the existing floor plan and we can compare an optional Vastu-oriented arrangement with a practical design alternative in 2D, with 3D views where useful. You choose the direction that suits you.
